HAFT SEEN SET
Haft Seen (also spelled Haft Sin) is a traditional table setting used during the Persian New Year celebration of Nowruz, which falls on the spring equinox. The name Haft Seen means “seven S’s,” and refers to the seven symbolic items that are placed on the table as part of the display. These items are traditionally placed on a cloth or tray, and each item represents a wish for the new year. The items often include:
Sabzeh: sprouts or grass, symbolizing rebirth and renewal
Samanu: a sweet pudding made from wheat germ, symbolizing affluence
Senjed: dried fruit of the oleaster tree, symbolizing love
Serkeh: vinegar, symbolizing age and patience
Sib: apples, symbolizing health and beauty
Somaq: sumac berries, symbolizing sunrise
Sorb: garlic, symbolizing medicine and health
