KHATAM JEWELRY OR PENCIL BOX
A slim khatam pencil box with pieces of metal and wood beautifully laid over the wooden surface. It is designed in two patterns: 1. Full Khatam 2. Tazhib art. Long and narrow, it works just as well as a decorative pencil box on a desk as it does a case for bracelets and watches on a dresser. Each one is made by an artisan based in Persian Heritage.
Size: 20 x 6.5 x 6 cm
Khatam
Khātam is an ancient Persian technique of inlaying. It is a version of marquetry where art forms are made by decorating the surface of wooden articles with delicate pieces of wood, bone and metal, precisely cut into intricate geometric patterns.
Designing inlaid articles is a highly elaborate process. Inlaid articles in the Safavid era took on a special significance as artists created their precious artworks. Woods used include betel, walnut, cypress and pine. These works include doors and windows, mirror frames, Quran boxes, inlaid boxes, pen and penholders, lanterns and shrines.
A Persian desk gift like this suits graduations, new jobs and Father’s Day alike. Discover more home decor products HERE, or browse the rest of our Persian jewellery box collection.
