Khatam
Khatam is an ancient Persian technique of inlaying, a version of marquetry in which surfaces are decorated with precisely cut pieces of wood, bone and metal forming intricate geometric patterns. Designing a copper bonbon dish and vase in this craft is a highly elaborate process; inlaid articles took on special significance in the Safavid era, when artists applied khatam to doors, mirror frames, Quran boxes, pen holders, lanterns and shrines. Woods used include betel, walnut, cypress and pine.
