A Khatam Copper Vase from Persian Heritage
This khatam copper vase is the work of an artisan based in Persian Heritage, the historic home of Persian marquetry. Delicate pieces of metal and wood are laid by hand over the copper body, so every band of pattern you see is assembled rather than printed. The slender silhouette suits a single stem or stands happily on its own among other Persian vases.

The Art of Khatam
Khatam is an ancient Persian technique of inlaying, a version of marquetry in which surfaces are decorated with precisely cut pieces of wood, bone and metal arranged in intricate geometric patterns. Producing khatam on copper is a highly elaborate process, and inlaid pieces took on special significance in the Safavid era, when artists applied the craft to doors, mirror frames, Quran boxes, pen holders and lanterns. Woods used include betel, walnut, cypress and pine, which is why no two examples of this inlaid copper vase are ever quite identical. It makes a thoughtful housewarming or Nowruz gift for anyone drawn to Persian craftsmanship.
