About the Minakari art:
The craft behind this piece is called Mina, and its history runs back around 5000 years. In the ancient Persian language mina means blue, and the blue of these enamelled vessels is a symbol of heaven’s sky. Blue is still the traditional colour, though contemporary Mina handcrafts also come in green, grey, pink and other shades.
Meenakari is the art of painting and colouring the surface of metal objects. The colours are in most cases prepared from metal oxide powders blended with special oils and solvents into a creamy paint, and each oxide fires to a different colour.
The blank forms, mainly copper, are hammered and shaped into vases, plates, containers and many other objects. Before the white enamel base coat goes on, the surface must be spotless; even minor dirt, hand oil or moisture can crack the finished piece. The coated object is then baked in the furnace in a few stages at around 700°.
After cooling, each item’s uniquely designed pattern is transferred to the surface: drawn on paper first, pricked with rows of tiny holes along the lines, then dusted through with graphite powder to mark the metal. Next comes the hand painting, the true spirit of Mina, where the artist works patiently over every detail to make the piece unique, modern and beautiful.
