About the artwork:
The artwork you are purchasing is Meenakari art, a craft with a rich history of around 5000 years. Mina means blue in the ancient Persian language, and the blue in this work symbolises heaven’s sky. Blue is the traditional colour, yet contemporary Mina handcrafts are also found in green, grey, pink and other shades.
Mina is the art of painting and colouring the surface of metal objects. The paint is prepared, in most cases, from metal oxide powders mixed with special oils and solvents until they form a creamy paint, and different metal oxides fire to different colours.
The copper forms are made by hammering and shaping, from vases to plates and containers. Before the white enamel coating is applied, each object must be cleaned thoroughly, since even minor dirt, hand oil or moisture can cause a crack in the final product. The enamelled object is then baked in the furnace at around 700° in a few stages.
Once it has baked and cooled, the uniquely designed pattern of each piece is transferred to the surface: the design is drawn on paper first, small holes are punched along the lines, and graphite powder marks the metal through them. The white-coated copper is then painted carefully and artistically by hand. This stage is the most important part of the work and the spirit of Meenakari art, and the artist spends many hours on the details to make each piece unique, modern and beautiful.
The final object is baked once more at around 800° to stabilise the colour, so the Mina surface is stable, washable and anti-scratch. If a grouping suits your wall better, the minakari plate set wall frame gathers three smaller plates in one frame, while the unframed 30 cm minakari wall plate offers the same painting tradition without the border.
