NOWRUZ CANDLE
Nowruz is the traditional Persian New Year, which is celebrated on the spring equinox, typically on March 21st. The holiday marks the first day of the Iranian calendar and is a time for renewal, celebration, and the coming of spring. One of the traditional customs of Nowruz is the lighting of the “shamshir” or “shambeh” candle. This candle is typically made of wax and is lit on the first Tuesday of Nowruz. The candle is meant to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness, as well as the coming of spring. The candle is traditionally kept burning until the last Tuesday of Nowruz, called Sizdah Bedar. It’s a time when people will go out to nature and picnic and there is a custom to take the sabzeh (wheat, barley or lentil sprouts) which grown on Haftsin table to be thrown in the rivers or lakes, as a symbol of returning to nature and releasing the past year sorrows.
