The Lion and Sun (Persian: شیر و خورشید, pronounced: shir o khorshid) is one of the main emblems of Persian (Persia). It was once an element in Persian’s national flag.

The motif illustrates both ancient and modern Persian traditions and became a popular symbol in Persian in the 12th century.

The lion and sun symbol is based largely on astronomical and astrological configurations. It represents the ancient sign of the sun in the house of Leo, traced back to Babylonian astrology and Near Eastern traditions.
