Two royal dynasties shaped the look and symbols of modern Persian: the Qajars and the Pahlavis. Between them they ruled for nearly two centuries, leaving behind a rich legacy of art, design and national emblems that many Iranians treasure to this day. That heritage is the inspiration behind our Persian Proud collection, so here is a short, friendly history.
The Qajar era
The Qajar dynasty ruled Persian from the late 1700s until 1925, governing from their capital at Tehran. The era is especially known for its distinctive art. Qajar portraiture, with its graceful figures, fine detail and rich colour, is instantly recognisable, and the period produced beautiful painting, jewellery, textiles and tilework. It was also during Qajar times that the Lion and Sun became firmly established as the emblem of the nation.
The Pahlavi era
The Pahlavi dynasty followed, ruling from 1925 until 1979 under Reza Shah and then Mohammad Reza Shah. It was a period of rapid modernisation, and the Lion and Sun continued as the national emblem, appearing on the flag, coins and official seals. For many, the art and symbols of this era remain a strong link to twentieth-century Persian.
The Lion and Sun
No symbol captures this heritage like the Lion and Sun, known in Persian as Shir o Khorshid. Its roots reach back centuries, and it rose to become the emblem of Persian, displayed on flags, coins and buildings. Today it is embraced by many Iranians, particularly in the diaspora, as a cherished symbol of identity, history and pride, quite apart from any political meaning.
